We were pleased to welcome 11 novice exhibitors to our “Have a go at dog showing” event held in conjunction with our Open Show, today.

20180624_120509[1]20180624_120519[1]

Sue Seath and Becki Rowe were the instructors and Chrissy Gibson helped out as the guest judge for the day. This event was for anyone who hasn’t shown before or who has less than a year’s experience and who wanted to find out what’s involved in showing a Dachshund.

Chrissy, Sue and Becki talked about how to show your dog in a typical show class and what the judge will expect your dog to do. Participants received a handout covering…
– How to fill in an entry form.
– What equipment you will need for your dog at the show.
– What to do when you arrive at a show.
– A description of judging procedures.
– What to do if you win a class.
– What to do after your class.

Everyone also received a Certificate and a small gift as a “thank you” for taking part.

The Kennel Club Breed Rescue Calendar is now available to buy

br20calendar20shop20imageThe Kennel Club Breed Rescue calendar showcases 12 rescue dogs who have found their ‘forever’ homes through Kennel Club Breed Rescue organisations.

The calendar is available to buy via the KC’s online shop for £5. All proceeds from sales will go towards helping the rescue and re-homing of pedigree dogs in the UK through Kennel Club Breed Rescue. The Kennel Club works closely with breed rescue organisations throughout the UK to promote and support the work that is being done to find the right homes for pedigree dogs.

Please spread the word about the calendar which is supported by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust and is a great way to publicise the importance of breed rescue organisations.

Why not buy a calendar as a Christmas gift?

What does the Southern Dachshund Association do for its members and their dogs?

With all the current focus on the contribution made by Breed Clubs, our Secretary has written a short summary of the multitude of things SDA does. Our area covers quite an expanse; basically Kent in the East, to Dorset in the West – all Counties below the M4:

  • We run an annual Championship show at Slough (Berks.) which we are moving to March in 2017 (the week before Crufts) to encourage more entries (and a better time of year weather-wise).
  • We run an Open Show at Pirbright (Surrey) which is popular with showing and non-showing Members due to its ‘Garden Party’ atmosphere.
  • We co-run the Great Joint Dachshund Association championship show each year, which attracts among the biggest Dachshund entries of the year and makes annual donations to canine good causes.
  • Our Patrons are Lord & Lady (Julian & Emma) Fellowes of Downton Abbey fame, and every year in July we run a Fun-day at their home in Dorset. This is an extremely popular event with our non-showing Members. We usually have about 200 people turn up with their Dachshunds, many of whom are pet owners and newcomers to the breed. The day includes lure racing, egg & spoon race for all ages and other competitions.

  • We also hold a Christmas lunch and match in December for our members and their friends.
  • We send members a 60-page Newsletter each year that has stories, articles and event dates, etc.
  • We have a brilliant Committee who never have to be told what to do on Show days …..they just get on with running it!
  • One of our Committee runs ‘Daxaid’; the organisation that provides help with temporarily looking after Dachshunds owned by people who have been hospitalised or are bedridden due to an accident or illness.
  • We organise Dachshunds for Discover Dogs at ExCel (previously Earls Court) and have done for years.
  • We also hold Seminars and Assessments; we are one of the most proactive Clubs in promoting the development of Dachshund judges.
  • We help with Dachshund Rescue and two of our Committee members are Trustees of Dachshund Rescue UK, which is a registered charity.
  • We make donations of at least £100 every year to canine charities and good causes.
  • We are financially viable and always have been. So, as you can see, we have a very active Club and provide our members with great value for just £7 per year. Our Mission is to promote the improvement and well-being of Dachshunds in the South of England.
