A pack of SDA Dachshunds vs. Phillip and Holly on ITV!

Vicky Wand and Hayley Chapman-Reith were invited to take their Dachshunds onto ITV’s “This Morning” show on July 11th. Vicky has kindly written about their experience for us. She is a member of the Southern Dachshund Association and Hayley is an SDA Committee member. What a great advert for these happy, outgoing, show dogs.

“Some of you may have watched ‘This Morning’ on Thursday 11th of July and saw there was a pack of Dachshunds causing havoc. These dogs belonged to Hayley Chapman-Reith and me. Earlier in the week a young man posted on some of the Dachshund Facebook groups asking if anyone would be interested in joining them in the studio as they were running a piece on The Sausage Dog Sanctuary that recently opened in Derbyshire. They were inundated with offers as you can imagine, including a call from me with simply ‘how many would you like’?

“To prepare for two packs of Dachshunds to work together on live TV, Hayley and I met up with all 9 dogs and allowed them time on lead to settle, before letting them run loose, they all hit it off!

“The next day, we arrived at the studio very excited. We settled the dogs into their dressing room and waited for our call with lots of visitors all wanting to meet and take pictures with them in the meantime.

“Our call came and the dogs were off with purpose as though they knew! Once on set we briefed Phillip and Holly as quickly as we could and handed over the leads. Phillip was given my 4 Standard Smooths whilst Holly was given Hayley’s 4 Miniature Smooths and Standard Smooth, with dogs poised ready on the sofa.

“Lights, camera, action! All dogs behaved impeccably, even when Holly took a dive onto the floor with all dogs looking on.

“The clip has now over a million hits; it’s made their ‘best bits’,  as well as multiple newspapers running articles with our representatives of the breed looking fab, as I’m sure you can agree.” https://youtu.be/JO2O6vu40jY

Thank you to our Discover Dogs helpers

The Officers and Committee of the SDA would like to thank our team of helpers for bringing their hounds to the Dachshund booths at Discover Dogs, ExCel this weekend. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to help potential buyers and current owners to learn more about the breed.

Hopefully, we helped people understand they are not “toy dogs” and that they need plenty of mental stimulation and physical exercise.

All the dogs were brilliantly behaved and great ambassadors. They had so many cuddles and lots of pictures taken. Facebook and Instagram must be full of Dachshunds!

Fun in the sun for our “Have a go at dog showing” event today

We were pleased to welcome 11 novice exhibitors to our “Have a go at dog showing” event held in conjunction with our Open Show, today.

20180624_120509[1]20180624_120519[1]

Sue Seath and Becki Rowe were the instructors and Chrissy Gibson helped out as the guest judge for the day. This event was for anyone who hasn’t shown before or who has less than a year’s experience and who wanted to find out what’s involved in showing a Dachshund.

Chrissy, Sue and Becki talked about how to show your dog in a typical show class and what the judge will expect your dog to do. Participants received a handout covering…
– How to fill in an entry form.
– What equipment you will need for your dog at the show.
– What to do when you arrive at a show.
– A description of judging procedures.
– What to do if you win a class.
– What to do after your class.

Everyone also received a Certificate and a small gift as a “thank you” for taking part.

What do we do for our members and their dogs?
